1. Hampton Court Palace, Surrey

Henry VIII’s riverside palace is one of the most haunted places in the UK, and its most famous resident is his fifth wife, Catherine Howard.

Legend says she still runs screaming down the Haunted Gallery, pleading with the King for mercy. In 2003 the palace CCTV even caught a mysterious figure in period dress flinging open a fire door, and nobody has ever owned up to it.

2. Lumley Castle, County Durham

This 14th-century castle is home to Lily of Lumley, who, so the legend goes, was thrown down a well and never left.

She’s become something of a celebrity in the cricket world: visiting international teams staying at the castle have been so spooked that some players checked out early.

3. Ettington Park, Warwickshire

If this gothic mansion looks familiar, that’s because it played Hill House in the 1963 horror classic The Haunting.

Its own resident ghost is Lady Emma, a governess in white who’s said to slip straight through the walls. Perfect for couples who want a venue with serious film-set drama.

4. Leeds Castle, Kent

Set on islands in a lake, Leeds Castle is home to not one but two ghostly black dogs. One is said to bring bad luck.

The other is a very good boy who, legend has it, once barked a guest out of a window seat moments before the window fell into the moat. Here’s hoping you meet the lucky one on your way down the aisle.

5. Craig-y-Nos Castle, Swansea Valley

Craig-y-Nos was once home to Victorian opera superstar Adelina Patti, who built her own private theatre here.

It seems she never quite left the stage: guests still report hearing her singing drift through the theatre. Your first dance comes with a very special support act.

6. Warwick Castle, Warwickshire

Sir Fulke Greville was murdered by his own servant in 1628, and he’s said to haunt the aptly named Ghost Tower to this day. Some visitors swear he steps right out of his own portrait.

Founded by William the Conqueror in 1068, Warwick is one of the most haunted castles in the UK and one of the most spectacular places to get married.

7. Walworth Castle, Darlington

Two of Walworth’s resident ghosts are caught up in a love story to rival Romeo and Juliet. It’s the perfect backdrop for a couple ready to give them a run for their money in the commitment stakes, and a fireside story your guests will be retelling long after the last dance.

8. Mosborough Hall, Sheffield

This historic hall has its own White Lady, who drifts through the oldest suite in the house with her loyal dog at her side. A plus-one and a plus-paw.

9. Farnham Castle, Surrey

For centuries the home of the Bishops of Winchester, Farnham Castle has a phantom monk, ghostly children on the balcony and a girl who lives on the staircase. That’s half your guest list sorted already.

10. The Bodleian Library, Oxford

In 1645 the Bodleian famously refused to lend a book to King Charles I. Some say he’s been getting his own back ever since, prowling the upper reading room by night, pulling out one book at a time and reading a single line before putting it back.
