Description

Grittenham is set in the heart of West Sussex in the South Downs National Park. The barn, farmhouse and outbuildings form a historic site that was mentioned in the Domesday Book. We do a maximum of 40 weddings a year which means that each one is unique and there is no feeling of being on a conveyor belt. Couples and their friends and family have access from 9 am the day before their wedding until noon the following day giving you plenty of time to set up to enable you to enjoy your big day to the full. Our historic Sussex Barn has been carefully and thoughtfully renovated. It features a stunning central fireplace, vaulted ceiling and traditional iron chandeliers which look incredible adorned with flowers. The space is beautiful but flexible; with lighting, flowers, and candles, you can easily create the mood you want for your wedding - be it elegant, relaxed and romantic or dramatic. The barn seats 120 people comfortably or 250 standing. Tables, chairs and lighting are included in the hire price. A lovely, traditional canvas marquee is also available to hire; this was made specifically for the grass area next to the courtyard, and works brilliantly for reception drinks, music or as a chill-out area. Grittenham Barn is set in 7 acres of stunning grounds with many beautiful garden areas to enjoy with your guests. We also have two beautiful self contained accommodations with open-plan living room/kitchen, double bedroom and bathrooms which are available for couples and their family to book. Admire the views of the South Downs and neighbouring vineyard, visit our donkeys and pigs, or watch the ducks paddling on the lake. The opportunities for stunning wedding photographs are endless! Grittenham Barn is licensed for civil ceremonies, both inside the barn and in the grounds, or you can choose to get married at one of the beautiful local country churches. Tillington church is spectacular and features in a number of Turner paintings. Please come and visit.

Grittenham has been my family home since 2001 when we purchased it off the Mitford estate (my brother) where it had been tenant farmed for many generations. The farm and surrounding buildings have been completely restored with love and attention and we have created a beautiful garden from what was just farmland. We are very proud of the result of our hard work. We are very lucky and love sharing this beautiful, historic place with wedding couples and their guests on their most special day.

The wedding of our dreams! The wedding of our dreams!
Grittenham barns is an incredible venue for that gorgeous English countryside wedding. From the beautiful rustic barn to the picturesque lake and fields. Nicola, Mark and Katherine were super helpful in the build up and on the day of our wedding. Lots of communication, ideas shared and they make you feel so relaxed. This venue made our wedding day dreams come true. Highly recommend Grittenham Barns for your special day. Grittenham barns is an incredible venue for that gorgeous English countryside wedding. Everyone loved it!Everyone loved it!
We got married here on a Saturday in mid-May and had a great experience all round. From being able to access the venue at 9am the day before,having accommodation on site as an optional extra, and having Charlie available to help with odd works and show us how things ran, Grittenham really couldn’t be faulted. The weather and forecast were very undecided, but up until the Friday during set-up we still had the option to choose to have the ceremony outside if the forecast looked good. We chose to hire the marquee as well, which worked really well for the caterers to serve during the reception. The lead up to the wedding was very straightforward, with Katherine helping us to organise via email, and helping us to view the venue a couple times for prep. We got married at Grittenham Barn in April and can honestly say we had the best day and wouldn't have changed a thing. Katherine was very helpful in the lead up to the wedding answering all our questions as they came up. Then on the day Charlie was a star making sure everything ran smoothly behind the scenes and liaising with our suppliers so we didn't have to worry about a thing. Our wedding completely surpassed our expectations. The weather was gorgeous which of course helps and we last minute shifted our ceremony to outdoors. Whilst we were setting up the barn on Friday the team made sure everything outside was ready for us which was amazing. Such an incredible daySuch an incredible day
I'd just like to say a massive thank you to all who made her and Jason's wedding last Saturday such an incredible day! At the last minute the ceremony was moved from inside to out due to the amazing weather and I know a lot of work must have gone in to enable the walled garden area to look so lovely with v little warning and with newly cut grass etc. Friday setting up felt v special with all those on site feeling like part of a little team...a v welcoming vibe from everyone. A magical, perfect day A magical, perfect day
From organising months (a year?) in advance, right up to the day after the wedding, Katherine and Charlie were absolutely fantastic! So super helpful, put us at ease when setting up and rehearsing before the day and just made the whole day absolutely perfect. Charlie is the helping hand you don't think about needing when planning, but my god am I glad he was there! He put me at ease when my anxiety was building before seeing anyone, allowing me and my dad a moment of pause before walking down the aisle, and making sure me and my new husband had a private moment to soak everything in after the ceremony. Every single moment of the day was perfect and whether he was behind the curtain or behind the bar, he was a friendly welcoming face that everyone needs on such a big day! We had our wedding here in mid October and it was fantastic from start to finish. The venue is beautiful and practically decorated itself. We had 50 guests for the ceremony and 80 in the evening which was perfect for us (this would easily work for more). Our guests were blown away by how beautiful the venue was. We were lucky enough to have the ceremony outside in the garden which was a gorgeous setting. We used vendors from their recommended list and they were all extremely helpful having worked at the venue before. The owners of Grittenham were also super helpful in making sure everything would be ready and that the day ran smoothly around us and completely stress free. We used the Grittenham Bar Company for the evening drinks and unsurprisingly they were just as helpful as the rest and made for a fantastic party that had us all wanting to stick around for more. Grittenham Barn were amazing through the entire process! Just hands on enough. Katherine was always helpful when I had a question and followed up when needed but no more which was so ideal. Exactly the same vibe when we were setting up on the Friday as well, there if needed her but left us to it otherwise. This made us feel so relaxed and that everything was in hand and going to be okay. Charlie and Rory on the day were just incredible, and again there just when we needed them like magic! Also just so fun! Visually it speaks for itself and was just what we were looking for. For our style it was basically ready to go which made life so easy. The donkeys were a huge hit amongst our guests on the day as well. Basically it was all perfect and I wouldn't have changed a thing about the experience we had from start to finish. We always knew we wanted to get married in a barn setting, but Grittenham barn shone for us. During the stressful time of venue searching, Grittenham barn exuded a chill vibe which we didn’t know we needed until we found it. The barn, grounds and views speak for themselves when you visit with endless photo opportunities. The donkeys are iconic and a big hit with guests too - everyone kept taking photos with them! Communication was really good and relaxed without being pushy. I think one of the best advantages is that you have the barn the whole of the Friday before, this really helps as you have time to make it your own and means it’s doesn’t feel like a conveyor belt wedding. It also extended the whole weekend which we loved. Having accommodation onsite was also a lovely perk. The owners and Katherine are very easy going and helpful but Charlie was particularly helpful on the day. He made it run without stress and nothing ever seemed to be a problem. We saw loads of wedding venues before we chose Grittenham Barn, none of them quite hitting the mark. Once we'd arrived to our viewing at Grittenham we knew we wanted to get married there instantly. We wanted something that felt warm and comfortable and allowed us to personalise the day. Grittenham was perfect - it was completely un-corporate and SUCH a beautiful setting. Plus, I mean there are donkeys... It was so gorgeous. Charlie was INCREDIBLE on the day itself and Katherine, Mark and Nicola were always so helpful in the run up to it. We are so grateful we got to marry in such a special place. Describe the best wedding that happened at your venue?

I married Mark 6 years ago so that has to be the best wedding for me. My step son also got married here in 2022 by the lake which was very special for us. However, all the weddings are special and unique. I still find 15 years on watching the bride walk up the aisle very moving.

What is your No.1 wedding planning tip for couples?

Enjoy it! You have plenty of time to set up and pack down so make it fun and relaxed and enjoy the moment!

What’s your favourite personal touch you’ve seen at a wedding?

A duck toller retriever (we have one too) giving the couple the rings. I also loved the wedding which had birds of prey on display and an owl delivered the ring.

Stunning, beautiful, relaxed, natural, rustic

Where’s the best photo spot at your venue?

There are plenty, the photographers love it - down by the lake is a favourite, as are the donkeys and pigs, walking through the gardens, the nut walks or up into the surrounding cornfields. The South Downs can be seen from most spots including the barn itself. Some people even love the industrial barns at the back of the farm and Mark's old Land Rovers

Have you had any celebrity guest or wedding at your venue?

I am hopeless at celebrities! Perhaps Mark's niece Sara who got 100 caps for England at Netball

What’s your favourite canapé?

Mini yorkshire puddings with roast beef and horseradish

What’s your favourite midnight treat?

Cheese but it isn't good for a restful night!

The huge, double oak glass doors in the barn as well as the central log fire
