We recently held our wedding at Ashley Wood Farm and overall had a fantastic experience. It is a truly beautiful, picturesque venue set in woodland with rivers and natural planting, which creates a really special atmosphere.
What stood out positively
Extended access to the venue
One of the biggest advantages is the access window. For a Saturday wedding, you get the venue from 8:00am on Friday through to 1:00pm on Sunday. This is incredibly valuable. It gives you proper time for setup, rehearsals, decorating, and then a relaxed pack-down the next day. It removes a lot of pressure compared to same-day venues.
Freedom to create your own vision
Ashley Wood Farm gives you full control. Aside from tables, chairs, and the bar, you are responsible for everything else. That flexibility is a huge strength if you want to design something personal. You can create your own seating areas, social spaces, and overall layout exactly how you want.
Beautiful setting and layout
The barn is great, and the outdoor ceremony space at the back is excellent. We held our ceremony there and it worked perfectly. The gardens, flowers, and natural surroundings are stunning and create a really relaxed but special feel.
Strong recommended suppliers
The suppliers they work with were excellent. Our catering provider and the lighting company were both outstanding and really enhanced the day.
Supportive hosts
The hosts were fantastic. Friendly, helpful, and accommodating throughout. They also encouraged site visits, including seeing setups from other weddings, which was very useful for planning.
On-site accommodation
The cottage on site was a great addition and we would strongly recommend booking it if possible. It made the weekend feel more complete and gave us a space to stay close to everything.
Things to be aware of
MOST IMPORTANT - Location and travel logistics
The venue is quite remote. While that adds to its charm, it does make logistics challenging:
- Accommodation nearby is limited and needs to be booked well in advance, if there's another wedding on nearby... We were booking 1-year out, and still struggling
- Guests may need to stay in places like Salisbury or Shaftesbury, which are around 30 to 35 minutes away
- Taxis and transport are REALLY difficult to secure, especially late at night
- Planning transport early is essential, particularly if arranging minibuses or shared travel - 1 year out booking, and it was already a challenge to get availability!
You need to organise everything yourself
This is not a “plug and play” venue. Unlike hotels, nothing is pre-staged or run for you. You need a clear plan for the full day, layout, timings, and logistics. If you are happy to take that on, it is rewarding, but it does require effort and coordination.
Capacity considerations
We had around 80 guests, which felt comfortable and (Close to) full. I'm aware others have had many more, but it depends on the vibe. That being said, there are only 2x Toilets - we hired in for 80 and are really pleased we did!
Hay bales could be improved
The hay bales provided were useful for creating seating areas, especially around the fire pits. However, they were not very fresh and had a noticeable odour. We covered ours with blankets, which helped, but fresher or better maintained bales would improve the experience.
Music cut-off time
Music finishes at 11:30pm, with guests departing by around 12:30am. It works, but it did feel slightly early given the remote setting. A small extension would make a difference, although we understand the restrictions.
Overall
Ashley Wood Farm is a brilliant venue if you want a relaxed, beautiful setting and the ability to fully personalise your wedding. The extended access and flexibility are real strengths, and the setting is genuinely stunning.
However, it works best if you are prepared to take ownership of the planning, logistics, and setup. If you go in with a clear vision and plan ahead, it can deliver a really special and memorable weekend. We recently held our wedding at Ashley Wood Farm and overall had a fantastic experience.
