Hi, I'm Ian Kugler Photography 👋
Friendly
Calm
Experienced
Weddings go wrong, I don't! Over a decade of handling national crises means nothing on your wedding day will rattle me – not the weather, not the timeline, not the in-laws.
I took my first technically perfect photo at four, in -20°C, and I've paid close attention to detail ever since. I've directly learned from photographers at the top of the industry – Rankin and Greg Williams among them – and it shows in how I work. I've also stood on your side of the camera, as a wedding guest myself: someone who notices small things, stays composed when plans shift, and loves a room full of people celebrating.

Ian Kugler Full Description

Hi, I'm Ian 👋

Precise. Unshakeable. Quietly relentless.

Weddings go wrong in small, unpredictable ways — I've spent fifteen years running government departments through national emergencies, so nothing about your day rattles me. What you get is a photographer who's already thinking three steps ahead, with an architect's eye for light and line, working until your gallery is better than it needed to be.

Let's go deeper...

I took my first technically correct photograph at four years old, in -20°C, on a family trip. I don't remember deciding to love photography — it decided for me, and every year since has just been proof.

What I do remember deciding is how I work. For over a decade I've run government departments through national and international crises — the kind of pressure where the room is loud, the information is incomplete, and someone still needs to make the right call in five minutes, not five days. That's where I learned to stay calm when everyone else can't, spot the thing about to go wrong before it does, and keep working with total focus while everything moves fast around me. A wedding day is chaotic in a much better way — but the skill transfers completely. If your timeline slips, the light disappears early, or your florist is having a moment, I'm not the person who panics. I'm the person who already has a plan B.

The other half of how I see is architecture. I trained at the RCA's Architecture Summer School, and I still can't walk into a room without reading it — where the light falls, where the lines lead the eye, what the space wants to do with the people in it. That's not a style I switch on for weddings; it's just how I see, all the time, and it's why my photographs tend to have a structure to them that "point and shoot beautiful" often doesn't.

I don't believe in a standard package dressed up as bespoke. I over-prepare for every wedding — venue, light, timings, the specific things that matter to you — because I'd rather arrive knowing more than I need to than find out what I missed on the day. And I care, properly, about what it's actually like to work with me: how quickly I reply, how relaxed you feel in front of the camera, how good the gallery feels to open. That's not a claim, it's just where I put my effort.

A lot of photographers will tell you they're calm under pressure, endlessly reliable, able to handle anything the day throws at them. Most have never had to prove it. I have — repeatedly, in rooms with far higher stakes than a wedding — and that's the difference between a photographer who says it and one who's already done it.

I love weddings for a simple reason: I love being around people who are fully alive — festivals, celebrations, big emotional gatherings, it's always been my energy. There's nothing else quite like a room full of people who love each other, all in one place, on purpose. I've been on both sides of that — as a photographer, and as a guest at more weddings than I can count — so I know what the day actually feels like from every angle, not just from behind a lens.

If you want photographs with genuine technical precision, a calm presence on the day whatever happens, and someone who'll quietly go further than the brief — that's what I do.

p.s.

I’m NOT your photographer if you’re ok with paying for Tacky looking, washed out, overly vibrant or gimmicky photos?

I am however, the perfect photographer for you if you value beautiful light, attention to detail, calmness under pressure, a caring personality, heart and most importantly powerful memories which come flooding back every-time you look at the images we created together! I want you to love working with me, nothing less! 🫶🏼

Message from the team

Name of Wedding Contact: Ian
Congratulations on your engagement! Wedding planning means a hundred decisions – your photographer shouldn't be one you worry about. I take on a limited number of clients each year, deliberately, so every couple gets my full attention and the quality that comes with it. This is my first year on Bridebook, not my first shooting weddings – I bring award-winning experience and honest advice throughout, whether or not we end up working together. Looking forward to hearing from you ☺️ Ian 🫶🏻

We honestly have no idea how he pulled it off!
Our timeline completely ran away from us and we thought we'd have to miss our couple photos altogether. Ian never made us feel stressed about it and just quietly kept adapting throughout the day. Somehow he still found us twenty minutes together and those have ended up being some of our favourite photos. We honestly have no idea how he pulled it off, but we're so grateful he did.

FAQs
Find out a bit more from our FAQs

We hate having our photo taken. Can you help?

Absolutely. In fact, most of the couples I work with tell me exactly the same thing. My job isn't to ask you to perform for the camera—it's to create an environment where you can simply enjoy being together. I'll gently guide you when needed, but the best photographs usually happen in the moments between the poses. By the end of the day, most couples tell me they forgot the camera was even there.

How do we know if we're choosing the right wedding photographer?

Beyond loving someone's photographs, ask yourself one question: How do they make you feel? You'll spend more time with your photographer than almost any other supplier on your wedding day. You deserve someone whose work you love, but just as importantly, someone who helps you feel relaxed, present and able to enjoy every moment.

How far in advance should we book?

As soon as you've secured your venue and date, I'd recommend booking your photographer. Popular dates can be reserved 12–24 months in advance, particularly during spring and summer. Once my diary is full, I never take on more weddings at the expense of the experience I give each couple.

What happens if it rains?

Rain rarely ruins great wedding photographs. Some of my favourite images have been captured in the most unexpected weather. I'll always have a plan, know nearby sheltered locations and, if the weather improves later in the day, we'll make the most of it. Whatever happens, we'll create something beautiful.

How many photographs will we receive?

Every wedding is different, so I never promise an exact number. My focus is always quality over quantity. As a guide, my Full Day Collection typically includes over 400 professionally edited high-resolution images, carefully selected to tell the complete story of your day rather than overwhelming you with hundreds of near-identical photographs.

How long will it take to receive our photographs?

I know you'll be excited to relive your wedding day, which is why I always send a selection of sneak peeks the very next day. Your full gallery is then carefully edited and delivered through your own private online gallery, typically within 2–4 weeks depending on your collection.

Do you help us plan the photography?

Absolutely. Every wedding includes a planning consultation where we'll talk through your timeline, family photographs, locations and everything that's important to you. The more we prepare beforehand, the more relaxed and enjoyable your wedding day becomes.

What happens if you're ill or something unexpected happens?

Thankfully, it's never happened, but I always believe in planning for the unexpected. I carry professional insurance, use backup equipment throughout every wedding and have strong relationships within the professional photography community should an emergency ever arise. Your wedding day is simply too important to leave to chance.

Do we need a second photographer?

Not always. For most weddings, I'm able to tell the complete story on my own, which is why my Full Day Collection is the choice most couples make. For larger weddings, multiple locations or couples who simply don't want to compromise on coverage, my Gold Package includes a dedicated second photographer so even more moments can be captured at the same time.

What happens after we've booked?

Once your booking is confirmed, we'll arrange your planning consultation and I'll be on hand whenever you need advice in the lead-up to your wedding. Whether it's timeline ideas, photography planning or simply answering a question, I'm here to help make the whole experience feel as relaxed and enjoyable as possible.
