Ellie Gillard photography Full Description
I launched Ellie Gillard photography in 2011, even in my first year, the weddings I shot were published on blogs and in magazines like Perfect Wedding and I went full time at the beginning of 2013. I love telling the story of a wedding day from my own artistic point of view, seeing it, feeling it, being part of it. Photographically I love golden hour, window light, dark rooms, unconventional brides and grooms and oodles of love. I love unexpected venues – warehouses, pubs, town halls, galleries and restaurants and outside of London I love outdoor ceremonies in the wilderness, by trees and lakes; in tipis and forests. I want this to be one of the easiest relationships you have with a ‘supplier’ in the run up to your wedding day, and to work with you to create awesome images that you’ll love forever. When I photograph the two of you I try to create a space where you can be authentic, where I capture the real you and not some photographers view of who you are. Aside from my work; I lived in both East London (Bethnal Green) and South East London (in between East Dulwich and Peckham) before settling into our ‘grown up house’ with my gorgeous husband Joss and our menagerie of pets - our cats Poppy, Pippin and Midnight, and our rescue dog Benson, the newest addition to the family. I still dabble with film photography, but digital is my workhorse. I’m an equal opportunities photographer and love the fact that, as of now, everyone can get married irrespective of race, gender or sexuality and that is a fantastic thing.

We totally lucked out to have Ellie as our wedding photographer
We are utterly blown away by Ellie's work. I literally feel transported back to our wedding day when I look at our photo gallery and 7 months on we still can't decide which photos to go into an album as each and every one tells a story. Such special moments have been captured that we will treasure for a lifetime. Ellie is a legend and out of everything we spent cash dollar on getting hitched, Ellie was worth every single dime.

We Can't Thank You Enough
Thanks so much for making all of our guests, and us, feel so at ease on our wedding day. Elmley is such a beautiful venue that is very dear to us and you really did it justice. We really appreciate the way you captured the magic of the day, including the moments we missed. Your style of photography is so us and we can't thank you enough for encapsulating the love we felt on that day and our loved ones celebrating with us. All our love - Gav & Abigail.

FAQs
Find out a bit more from our FAQs

What is your most memorable wedding?

Picking a favourite wedding is like picking a favourite child (or pet, in my case!) - they are all special and I'm lucky to get to do what I do for a living. I love that there's always something new to experience, even this far into shooting weddings.

Describe your style in 5 adjectives.

Creative, modern, unconventional, natural, fun

What about your business are you most proud of?

All of it really - that I get to call this my job still 11 years after photographing my first ever wedding.

What is your No. 1 wedding planning tip for couples?

When booking your photographer, make sure you find one you love, and who you connect with. It means you don't need to micromanage them, or send them Pinterest lists, but instead you can have lots of fun confident that they will capture your day the way you want.

What is your favourite personal touch you have seen at a wedding?

I love it when couples are just authentic to themselves and skip the traditions that don't suit, and embrace the ones that do - things like getting ready together, both doing a speech. You don't have to do things the 'old' way if you don't want to.

Describe your typical process with a couple.

So, I like to meet everyone I work with, usually via Zoom, and we chat, not just about the technicalites of the wedding, but about the two of you, and how you see the day going down. I want to hear how much fun everyone's going to have, not about your colour schemes! I provide lots of help and guidance with planning your photography to take up minimal time, but deliver the images that are important to you, including an engagement shoot (if you want one) to get to know each other better, so that we are all ready to be awesome on the day.

What is the No. 1 photo that you think every couple should take?

I don't think there is any #1 photo, in fact those kind of lists are the bane of my life, but what I think should happen is that you find a photographer you trust enough to capture the important moments, but more than that, one who you know will make everything beautiful regardless of what happens rather than applying a cookie cutter approach.

What is the most original photo you’ve been asked to take at a wedding?

I try to make all of my work feel original and fresh - if I'm at a venue I'm often looking for the things that interest me, or the best light, rather than the ornamental bridge that the co-ordinator reckons is cute. I think that's why people chose to work with me.

What do you recommend for a rainy day wedding?

Preparation and a willingness to embrace it! Buy some brollies, don your wellies and get out in it, or let your photographer suggest alternative dry locations.

Describe how you got into photography.

I started off learning film photography on my Art Foundation course before heading off to study Fashion at Kingston University, after that it was always a hobby but people kept saying 'why don't you try weddings' - so I did, and in my first year shot 7, 6 of which were featured in magazines and on blogs and it just grew from there until I was able to leave my job as a fashion buyer to focus exclusively on weddings!
