What’s a Good Gift to Bring to an Engagement Party?

There are no real rules as such when it comes to choosing what you should take to an engagement party. And it’s worth noting that a gift is not an essential part of engagement party etiquette – most couples will be more than happy with a card and your presence.

For those who don’t want to go empty handed, however, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Be guided by instinct. How well you know the couple and how much you can afford should be the main drivers when choosing a gift. Close friends and family might want to gift a cash contribution towards the wedding or an experience, while those who are work colleagues or acquaintances, a card will do fine.
  • Small gifts better suit a party setting. There may be a small box or table for people to leave their gifts on – consider something like a bottle of fizz or a box of chocolates.
  • Save grander gestures for the wedding. This is also a good idea if you’re teaming up with other friends or family members to gift something expensive or luxury, like a high-end appliance.

How Much Should You Spend on an Engagement Gift?

There’s no fixed rule on how much you should spend on an engagement gift. Typically, an engagement present would be a smaller gesture than the gift you buy for the wedding, but more importantly it comes down to how close you are to the couple and how much you can afford to spend.

A card alone is generally fine for colleagues and acquaintances, while anything between £15 and £40 is the typical spend for those buying for friends and family.

Pooling together with other friends, family or colleagues who know the couple is a great way to gift something bigger without overspending.

Do you have to give a gift when someone gets engaged?

No, a gift isn’t a requirement when someone you know gets engaged, often a handwritten card is enough of a thoughtful gesture.

Is it OK to give money as an engagement gift?

Money is a less common gift to give as an engagement present but is more than acceptable, particularly if you know the couple well and would like to contribute to their wedding costs. Cash can be a huge help to those planning a wedding.

What’s a good group gift for a newly engaged couple?

Pooling together with other friends, family, and work colleagues who know the couple is a great way to gift something bigger or more luxurious without going over budget.

Consider something like a luxury hamper of edibles (including champagne), a voucher for an experience or weekend away, a high-end appliance or item they might need for their home, or a subscription gift such as a wine subscription, coffee subscription, or book club.

Do you need to buy a gift for both the engagement and the wedding?

You don’t need to buy a gift for both the engagement and the wedding. Many people choose to give just a card, bottle of something, or small, token gift for the engagement and then splash out on something grander for the wedding.

In short, engagement gifts are optional while wedding gifts are often more expected.

How soon after an engagement should you send a gift?

Most people will take along a card or gift to the engagement party, if the couple are having one. If they’re not, there’s no real window or limit on when you can send your well-wishes and congratulations. Most would do so within a couple of weeks, however.

Is it rude to give a gift card as an engagement gift?

No, it’s not rude to give a gift card as an engagement present, particularly if you’ve been thoughtful about the type of gift card it is. Choose a gift card you know the couple will appreciate, such as a gift card for their favourite restaurant or bookshop.
