The Casa del Pellegrino hotel and restaurant offers refreshment to travelers who tackle the southern Via Francigena, reaching Monte Sant'Angelo to visit the ancient Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo, an essential stop on the journey of faith for centuries.
In an elevated position on the highest point of the Gargano promontory, the hotel is in the historic center of Monte Sant'Angelo, not far from Foggia, halfway between the mountains and the sea, in an archaic place, with unforgettable views and irresistible charm.
THE SANCTUARY OF SAN MICHELE ARCANGELO
was founded between the end of the 5th and the beginning of the 6th century AD. C. by the Bishop of Siponto, Lorenzo Maiorano.
Since then, the basilica has been a destination for pilgrimages from all over the world. Renovated and enlarged several times, it was particularly important in the Lombard and Byzantine periods, so much so that it is now recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site as a center of Lombard power and worship.
The sanctuary is a Celestial Basilica and has received, by official decree from the Church, Angelic Forgiveness, the possibility of offering plenary indulgence to pilgrims.
Saint Michael, in addition to being the head of the Archangels and the commander of the celestial hosts, is remembered and made an object of worship as a healer and as the one who weighs souls and introduces them to the presence of God, interceding for them.
The cave, where the first altar was placed, preserves several relics and is accessible by a long staircase or a lift, which leads to the Casa del Pellegrino hotel.
