The most important thing about me: I like people. I know you might have been expecting me to use words like portrait, documentary and art, but honestly, the thing that makes me; is that.

Personal Message from the Manager

Name of Wedding Contact: Simon Whatley
Hello, I'm Simon of "Wedding Photography Devon" under my umbrella company of "Acronym Photography". I hope that doesn't sound too confusing, it's simply that I sometimes shoot non-wedding related activities (portraits, families and occassionally old abandoned buildings with models- but the last one in particular doesn't particuarly help pay my mortgage) but I specialise in wedding photography.

What is your most memorable wedding?

Either: Polly and Darren at Tunnels Beach, it was the first time I'd seen an argument between a £5000 dress and a sparkler (luckily her husband is a member of The London Fire Brigade and there were several other members there). Or when Sarah and Simon sent me about 5 WhatsApp photos of their house decorated in dozens of photographs I'd made for them at their wedding.

Describe your style in 5 adjectives.

Friendly, knowledgeable, empathetic, tenacious and thoughtful.

What about your business are you most proud of?

I love the fact that I immerse myself into families and friendships to be able to record the event from the inside not as a snipper wandering around the perimeter.

What is your No. 1 wedding planning tip for couples?

Buy or make table and venue decorations that you can use in your home afterwards, they'll bring lasting memories.

What is your favourite personal touch you have seen at a wedding?

Dogs. I love it when a couple bring their dogs to a wedding.

Describe your typical process with a couple.

We have a chat via email, plan a phone-call, have an initial meeting involving coffee where I learn all about your wedding, you the couple, your friends and family.

What is the No. 1 photo that you think every couple should take?

I think the most important photograph that a professional should take of you is of that moment when as a couple

What is the most original photo you’ve been asked to take at a wedding?

I was shooting a wedding at Tapeley Park and many of the young men dressed in Peaky Blinders suits, which inspired me, so I grabbed three of the guys, we went onto the croquet lawn and they held the croquet mallets over their shoulders in iconic threatening poses (not very "wedding", but it has to be the most original shot I've taken at one).

What do you recommend for a rainy day wedding?

Smiles and transparent umbrellas.

Describe how you got into photography.

I've always owned a camera, I have boxes and boxes of friends photos from when we grew up. I trained in black and white photography a family-friend's darkroom and shot my first few weddings on black and white film only. I specialised in non-digital image projection whilst studying at university. Nowadays I shoot digital cameras and I love them; I'm able to deliver to you hundreds and hundreds of photographs in both colour and black and white (so you can choose which you prefer) that tell the whole story of your day. I love my job.
